The 15-inch Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is a great entry-level work computer for anyone looking for a good work machine for less than $500: It runs an AMD Ryzen 5 CPU with Radeon Vega 8 graphics (giving you a little bit of juice for light gaming) and 8GB of RAM, and it also sports a large 1TB internal hard drive.
At $430 after a $90 price cut, it's around the same cost or even cheaper than many of the best Chromebooks out there. Its specs rival laptops that typically go for $500 or more — and since it's packing pretty solid hardware for a cheap laptop, it won't feel outdated any time soon despite its low price.
Lenovo ThinkPad E495
No Windows laptop roundup would be complete without the iconic ThinkPad, and the Ryzen-based E495 is a sleeper hit. It features just about everything we love about these time-tested workhorses, right down to its sturdy construction, solid keyboard (complete with the must-have TrackPoint) and touchpad, and generous battery life. The 14-inch 1080p display isn't going to take your breath away, but that's probably not why you're buying a ThinkPad — and in any case, it's still better than many other ThinkPads which are still packing 720p screens for reasons we still don't understand.
In short, this thing is built for serious work, and it's built to do it all day long. The Surface Pro line has sat among our favorite 2-in-1s for a while now and the new Surface Pro 7, while not a breathtaking update, is a very solid machine. It's incredibly well-built, looks great, and performs well. It has a built-in kickstand, and when used with a Type Cover keyboard, makes for a fantastic 2-in-1 ultrabook. We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention that gorgeous, productivity-friendly 3:2 touchscreen.
