  • Lenovo IdeaPad 3 image

Lenovo built its name on affordable Windows laptops and still cranks out some of the best high-value work machines. The 15-inch Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is a great entry-level work computer for anyone looking for a good work machine for less than $500: It runs an AMD Ryzen 5 CPU with Radeon Vega 8 graphics (giving you a little bit of juice for light gaming) and 8GB of RAM, and it also sports a large 1TB internal hard drive.

At $430 after a $90 price cut, it's around the same cost or even cheaper than many of the best Chromebooks out there. Its specs rival laptops that typically go for $500 or more — and since it's packing pretty solid hardware for a cheap laptop, it won't feel outdated any time soon despite its low price.

    Lenovo ThinkPad E495 image

No Windows laptop roundup would be complete without the iconic ThinkPad, and the Ryzen-based E495 is a sleeper hit. It features just about everything we love about these time-tested workhorses, right down to its sturdy construction, solid keyboard (complete with the must-have TrackPoint) and touchpad, and generous battery life. The 14-inch 1080p display isn't going to take your breath away, but that's probably not why you're buying a ThinkPad — and in any case, it's still better than many other ThinkPads which are still packing 720p screens for reasons we still don't understand.

In short, this thing is built for serious work, and it's built to do it all day long. This configuration comes loaded with one of the newer AMD Ryzen 5 APUs featuring built-in Radeon RX Vega graphics (giving you a bit of gaming power from an otherwise business-oriented machine), 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Many ThinkPads will set you back a grand or more, but a $59 discount means the E495 can be yours for $670 right now.

    HP Spectre x360 13 2-in-1 (Refurbished) image

If you're looking for a convertible 2-in-1 that works as well as a laptop as it does as a tablet, then you need to look no further than the HP Spectre x360 13. The latest "gem-cut" version had a perfect score in our review on the strength of its stunning good looks, excellent performance, high-quality build, and mind-blowing battery life.

Right now, you can grab this HP-refurbished (read: nearly like new) model with a Core i7 CPU and 256GB SSD on sale for $200 off, bringing the price down to $799. That's a nice break, but keep an eye on this one because HP has been aggressive in pricing this version. That's probably for a good reason: HP has recently released a new version of the Spectre x360 13 that fixes its one issue — larger bezels — while upgrading to Intel's 10th-generation CPUs and adding a 4K OLED display option.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with Type Cover Keyboard image

One of the best laptops on the market today — and in fact, for several years running — is actually a tablet. The Surface Pro line has sat among our favorite 2-in-1s for a while now and the new Surface Pro 7, while not a breathtaking update, is a very solid machine. It's incredibly well-built, looks great, and performs well. It has a built-in kickstand, and when used with a Type Cover keyboard, makes for a fantastic 2-in-1 ultrabook. We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention that gorgeous, productivity-friendly 3:2 touchscreen.

One of our few complaints was that the Type Cover still isn't included by default, but this bundle solves that little hiccup: This configuration has a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD, and comes with a black Type Cover keyboard so you can use it as a laptop right out of the box. And at just $799 ($230 off), the whole bundle falls well within our $1,000 budget limit.

    MacBook Air (2020)

Deals on Apple products are hard to find, and so sometimes you need to grab them when you can. The MacBook Air, which was modernized and redesigned in 2018, is the best entry-level MacBook you can buy — perfect for a college student or businessperson. The latest 2020 refresh is just as great, and if you want the one with the latest and greatest hardware (that you can still find for less than 1,000 bucks), this is it.

Right now, you can score this deal on the 2020 MacBook Air at $50 off. This configuration comes with an Intel Core i3, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It also comes with a lovely display with a 2,560 by 1,600 resolution, giving you plenty of performance for productivity work. What's not to like?
